Examine Millerââ¬â¢s presentation of John Proctor :: English Literature
Examine Millerââ¬â¢s presentation of John Proctor and the Circumstances which lead to his choosing to be executed. Although the events of the play are based on events that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, Miller was liberal in his fictionalisation. For example, the affair between farmer, husband, and father John Proctor, and the Ministerââ¬â¢s teenage niece, Abigail Williams, drive many of the accusations of witchcraft in the play ââ¬â in fact at the time of the Witch Trials, Williams would only have been around eleven and Proctor would have been in his sixties. The play, written in 1953, was in response to Senator McCarthy and the ââ¬ËHouse Un-American Activities Committee'sââ¬â¢ crusade against supposed communist sympathisers, in which Miller became embroiled. When he testified in front of a congressional committee in 1956 he refused to reveal any names and so was held in contempt. The decision was overturned two years later. One of Miller's most powerful devices in the play is his use of irony: dramatic, verbal, and situational irony. Verbal irony is a figure of speech in which the speaker intends to be understood as meaning something that contrasts with the literal or usual meaning of what he says. One example of this is when John Proctor says ââ¬ËGood. Then her saintliness is done withââ¬â¢, mentioning Abigail. However, Proctor does not actually believe that Abigail is a saint. The affair makes her a sinner, because he is married to Elizabeth. However, he says this line because the rest of the town, and most importantly, the courts believe that she is believable and truthful. In effect, he tries to convince the court and the people of her ââ¬Å"unsaintlinessâ⬠, by bringing to their attention her sins, but to no avail; this is one of the most important circumstances which lead to his choosing to be executed. Another example has Proctor telling his wife ââ¬ËItââ¬â¢s winter in here yet.ââ¬â¢ However, it is actually spring, as in the same dialogue he asks her to go walking in the field with him so that they may pick flowers and bring them into their home. Proctor really means to tell his wife that their home is cold, that there is no sign of love. He believes that when his wife fills the home with warmth and love, he is forgiven for his sin of lechery, and only then can he continue normally with his life. By using this type of irony, Millerââ¬â¢s characters indirectly bring something to our attention, which could not otherwise be done. Situational irony is a discrepancy between what we expect and what occurs. This is the second type of irony used in the play.

Global Warming Assignment ââ¬ÅSummaryââ¬Â Essay
Global warming what is it? Global warming refers to an average increase in theEarthââ¬â¢s temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. So whatââ¬â¢s the big deal youà ask? Well the big deal is, if temperatures rise above normal levels for a few days, itââ¬â¢s no big deal, the Earth will stay more or less the same, but if temperatures continue to rise over a longer period of time, then the Earth may experience some serious problems! What causes global warming? The Earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere contains gases that naturally help to hold in heat, these natural Greenhouse gases keep our atmosphere warmà long after the sun has set and absorb the Sunââ¬â¢s heat during the day, keeping thetemperature from getting to high. Over the past 100 years, humans have altered theà chemical composition of the earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases, therefore resulting in Global Warming. Why are greenhouse gas concentrationsà increasing? Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Certain human activities, add to the levels of most of theseà naturally occurring gases. Carbon dioxide is released when solid waste, fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal), and wood are burned. Methane is emitted during the production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil. Methane emissions also result from the decomposition of organic wastes in landfills and the raising of livestock. Finally Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities. What are some of the effects, due to global warming? Surface temperatures have increased 1.0à °C-3à °C since the late 19th century. The 20th centuryââ¬â¢s 10à warmest yearsà have all occurred in the last 15 years of the century. Worldwide precipitation over land has increased by about one percent and globally, sea level has risen 4-8 inches over the past century. Global warming has also decreased snow cover in the northern hemisphere, and melted glaciers. Changing regional climate could alter crops yields, water supplies, and forests. It could also affect the health of ecosystems, animals and even humans.

Internal factors of a college or university include faculty, students, staff, alumni, athletic program, physical plant, grounds and maintenance, student housing, administration, academic programs, fraternities, sororities, and public relations. The sum total of all weighted score is equal to the total weighted score, final value of total weighted score should be between range 1.0 (low) to 4.0 (high). The average weighted score for IFE matrix is 2.5 any company total weighted score fall below 2.5 consider as weak. The company total weighted score higher than 2.5 is consider as strong position. And from the table above Philippine Womenââ¬â¢s University Sta. Cruz, Laguna Campus has a slight strong internal position and there are many areas need to improve further. Strategies After we evaluate our university, we think that there are some things that the university should do like daily checking of air-cons, lights, flushes of toilets, etc. They should build clinic in case of emergency, they should also build canteen, hire an HR, and have a head of each colleges. They should also include all the other or extra fees in tuition fee. And thereââ¬â¢s one thing that is important for us senior, we guess that they should take some actions in helping them on finding OJT. And maintain their strength or much better to improve it more.
2008 Presidential Campaigns and the Internet Essay
In fairly recent times the Internet has gained vast importance for the dissemination of information to the public.à The numbers of users on the Internet have grown exponentially throughout the years.à Presidential candidates have always recognized this fact and have procured websites to establish their viewpoints and positions on issues as well as ask for donations.à An evaluation of the John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama website will demonstrate how the candidates react to their beliefs in how the public consumes information. à à à à à à à à à à à John McCainââ¬â¢s website is the first to be investigated.à His website is mainly around to cater to his core voters of the Republican Party, but no doubt he is also attempting to appeal to all American citizens.à The first thing a person will notice from McCainââ¬â¢s website is that once you initially travel to his webpage it will first go to an introduction page asking viewers to join his email group as well as a button to donate money to his campaign.à The website does not start out with positions on issues or contain endorsements etc.à It appears McCainââ¬â¢s ultimate goal at the start is to solicit money to further his campaign.à This introduction page shows an image of John McCain in black and white with a black background, and does not contain any images or colors of the United States. (http://www.johnmccain.com/landing/?sid=gorganic) This aspect of the website is peculiar because it introduces a solicitation right from the start.à It could make some readers of the site not want to endorse McCain, especially readers that have ventured to his site in order to learn more about his positions.à At the bottom of the donation page there is a small link that asks whether or not the reader wants to go to the actual John McCain website.à Once a reader of the site clicks on this link then the real presidential website begins to form.à McCainââ¬â¢s main site has three items of note.à First, there is a video link that summarizes McCainââ¬â¢s torture and imprisonment in a POW camp, and the video is called ââ¬Å"Courageous Service.â⬠(http://www.johnmccain.com/)à Three other links to the website are on this part of the page called ââ¬Å"About John McCain,â⬠ââ¬Å"Why John McCain,â⬠and ââ¬Å"On the Issues.â⬠(http://www.johnmccain.com/) These sections are a good addition to the website because it allows an investigation into the person, why he should be president, and his stand on the issues.à The reader does not have to search through the site to find a particular campaign issue or information about McCain.à It is all separated and easy to identify.à A section of rotating pictures is on this portion of the site as well that gives insight into campaign activities.à An important aspect of the website is that McCain included a petition for the housing crisis. The petition is little more than a show of support for McCain in dealing with the housing crisis instead of what a reader would think as a real petition to enact some type of legislation. (http://www.johnmccain.com/involving/petition.aspx?guid=cf43f8ff-0854-4735-8346-9e4d07582474)à McCainââ¬â¢s presidential campaign website shows his trials and tribulations as well as his strong points throughout.à It establishes what many would see as a strong man that sticks by his beliefs on issues and does not waiver in the face of dissension.à Altogether the website effectively establishes what McCain undoubtedly attempted to present to the public. à à à à à à à à à à à Hillary Clintonââ¬â¢s website is similar to McCainââ¬â¢s in that it initially starts off with a donation page that appears to be separate from her main page. (https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/donate-b.html?sc=a724)à However, Clintonââ¬â¢s donation page is different from McCainââ¬â¢s because it plays a video of her support and numerous members of a crowd cheering her name.à Unlike McCain, Clintonââ¬â¢s donation page and the rest of her main site is not dark, but is a light shade of blue. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/splash/)à Once a reader clicks to her main site, they are met with another page that is asking the person to join her campaign as a member.à This appears to be the entire composition of her website, which is a little disappointing.à A prospective voter cannot visit her site and learn about her message or positions on issues. A viewer may overlook yet another link that will send the reader to the main site. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/splash/)à On the main site it seems as though Clinton is concerned about winning the Texas delegation. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/?splash=1) A logo pleads with the reader to help her win the state.à A spotlight section on the main site lists events such as winning a chance to meet Clinton and Elton John, veteransââ¬â¢ affairs, and an opinion from Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.à A little section titled ââ¬Å"The Hillary I knowâ⬠will show some of her positions on issues, but the logo for the link is very small and is not a major part of the page.à This is in stark contrast to the organized sections of the McCain site.à Clintonââ¬â¢s site is more appealing to the eye, but it lacks the substance that McCainââ¬â¢s website contains. à à à à à à à à à à à Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s presidential website has the same introduction page as the other two, but this time Obama speaks directly to the visitor instead of showing some campaign activities.à In order to navigate Obamaââ¬â¢s site, a user is required to register, however a reader can circumvent the registration process by merely typing in his main site and then visiting the sections on issues, learning about the candidate, etc. (http://my.barackobama.com/page/user/login?successurl=L3BhZ2UvZGFzaGJvYXJkL3ByaXZhdGU) This is a horrible concept for a website because it immediately will turn visitors away by making them think they need to register in order to learn more about the candidate.à Obamaââ¬â¢s website is also in a light shade of blue similar to Clintonââ¬â¢s and offers many instances for a visitor to view videos and photos like the other campaign sites.à However, it appears that Obamaââ¬â¢s website has the least amount of information available to a prospective voter, and thus is probably the worst website out of the three discussed. What are some of the gender implications of the current global Essay
What are some of the gender implications of the current global financial crisis How would a gendered perspective influence responses to the current recession at a global level - Essay Example Mortgage collapse was accelerated by credit default swaps. This led to credit freeze thus limiting investments and consumption leading to insufficient aggregate demand and economic crisis (Seguino, 2009). Governments resorted to bail outs thus cutting expenditure on social services such as; education, health and child care. There were massive job cuts leading to human rights crisis due to mass unrests as a result of economic hardships. This paper is a critique of the gender implications of the crisis and influence of gender perspective on responses to current recession. The current global financial crisis which has transformed into global economic crisis due to credit crunch has affected all people all over the world but the women are the most affected. This is because women are the caregivers at home and to the community and engage in unpaid, informal and volunteer work and mostly work in the services sector. The millennium development goals focus on womenââ¬â¢s access to work opportunities, income and resources and hence improve the welfare of children, families, community and promote economic growth (Antonopoulos, 2009). Jobs were thus created in textile sector through export processing zones, tourism and agriculture and also work in public service as social workers. Men on the other hand are involved in masculine jobs such as construction work in public works and are highly paid while females engage in lowly paid jobs. Globalization enhances masculine dominance (Acker, 2004). Due to traditions, women are considered dependent on men thus bene fits such as; social insurance, pensions and welfare benefits are paid through the husband (Elson & Cagatay, 2000). Privatization makes women more dependent on men as women lose public service jobs. The cut in government expenditure on social services has great effect on women. It translates to loss of jobs for women who are concentrated

Nonverbal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Nonverbal - Essay Example ited to personal space or proxemics, facial expressions or kinesics and a more commonly noticed modern issue known as aesthetics or ones external beauty. The nonverbal rule I have chosen includes not one but two, utilizing aesthetics and proxemics to view reactions and changes in interactions. In the experiment I undertook I chose to dress as a person from the street and sat next to a person we can call Mary at a bus stop. It became readily apparent that my being here was a distraction and she soon took her phone out and began having a whispered conversation with another unknown individual. While her tone was pleasant her body synchrony showed extreme anxiety that increased with small looks in my direction as she inched a little bit at a time down the bench to avoid me. As the minutes dragged on I stood up and moved closer to her side and then sat down again, her reaction was immediate and she stood up and walked around behind the bus stop to the opposite side. I attempted to speak with her and introduce myself, while explaining my actions she was not unfortunately entirely willing to converse as a result I decided to approach another individual. My next unfortunate subject we can call Tom, entered the bus stop directly following the exit of Mary and immediately sat down on the opposite side of the bench. His actions clearly showed his lack of desire for any interaction, his arms were crossed, and he placed headphones over his ears and lowered his eyes to look in front of him. I decided to sit down in front of him within a meter or so. His reaction was immediately apparent and he moved quickly and openly to the opposite side of the bench. I then shuffled slowly to the bench and sat down directly in the middle of it my location was less than an armââ¬â¢s length from Tom. I began playing with the crumpled newspapers I had and kicking noisily at various pebbles and items on the ground in front of us. He quickly decided that this was not to his liking and asked me

The Future of Harmonization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words
The Future of Harmonization - Essay Example This growth has led to a rising demand for the legal system to work together as well as the need for harmonization. Note that increase in trade is not the main reason why there should be a legal system taking care of activities in the market. The growth provides a base and context where harmonization of sales law should be approached. For a contract to be recognized it has to pass through a number of legal systems so as to keep problems in check. If there is an absence of coordinated law, then the private international law can be used to keep things sane. These rules may be difficult to apply if the governing law has been established. The traders may be forced to apply the local legal system which does not keep in mind the needs of an international standard. It may be worse if there is a lack of enforcement mechanisms in certain jurisdictions. A history of harmonization It is therefore of no doubt that international sales are in dire need for a harmonious legal system which will bypa ss local boundaries to be international. ... The United Nations took part in the regulation of international trade rules after the Second World War. It created many international organizations and developed a United Nations Commission on International Trade law which did well in trying to find a solution to a harmonious law which could be used globally. It was this group that came up with CISG as its first efforts to harmonization of trade among the different stake holders. Many regional organizations came into existence in this period. There was the European Union, Common market of the Southern Cone, North American Free Trade Agreement, Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa and Southern African Development Community. The main reason why these organizations emerged was due to commercial and economic development. Harmonization of Business Law in Africa steered a number if ministers to have a need in adopting a collection of laws that will be effective in member stake holders (member countries)3. These laws were beyond the countriesââ¬â¢ legal system. Harmonization activities are slow because of different countries having different believes and traditions therefore different laws. Harmonization of sales laws can take place in two levels which are the regional level and international level. Soft law vs. hard law Currently a lot of capital, time and man power is being spent on international harmonization and these efforts are not actually bearing any fruits4. An international convention is the vague process that has been used to solve this problem. The biggest issue about conversation is that much is talked about but little is done. ââ¬Å"By intervening in the legal market place, underestimating public distrust and legal disagreement as well as insisting on uniformity,
